Remember Tri-Five hunters, don’t discount the other 1955-1957 GM models when you spot one, like this 1955 Pontiac Star Chief!

This Pontiac model was made in General Motors’ Southgate, California factory (VIN code C). The two-tone paint is in overall excellent condition, dressed in White Mist over Turquoise Blue (code 62). The chrome bumpers fit tightly to the body, the engine bay is in very tidy order and the cargo area is in very good order and includes a full-sized spare tire and wheel. The Indian Head hood ornament lights up at night. Extra chrome fender skirts and a car cover are included.

This big two-door rolls on new bias-ply wide whitewall tires, size 7.10R15 at all four corners. Each one is mounted on a body-colored steel wheel topped by factory wheel covers. The wheels and tires are all in very good order.

Under the hood is a 287 CID Strato Streak V-8 engine. Unlike the V-8s from other carmakers, there is no “small-block” or “big-block” distinction. All Pontiac V-8s are based on the original 1955 architecture, regardless of displacement. The motor is bolted to a Strato-Flight Hydramatic four-speed automatic transmission and 3.64:1 rear end. Driver convenience features included power steering and power brakes.

Inside the car sports a striking turquoise vinyl interior with white trim, mirroring the outside well. The front and rear bench seats, the full carpeting and two-tone green steering wheel look great. The matching metal dashboard and the inner door panels are in overall excellent condition. A column-mounted shift lever and a factory AM radio help complete the interior.

Along with an all-new body, the straight-eight was superseded by the new Strato Streak V-8 power in 1955. Typical for the 1955 Pontiacs is the design with two wide “Silver Streaks” running the length of the hood. The hood ornament “Indian” was amber plastic that lit up when the headlights were turned on.

Competition to this Pontiac in 1955 included Dodge’s Coronet Lancer, DeSoto Firedome Sportsman, Hudson’s Hornet Coupe, Mercury Monterey Coupe and Oldsmobile’s 88 Holiday Coupe.

If you’re a General Motors fan, a Pontiac fan or you simply admire a mid-1950s car, this Pontiac Star Chief Catalina bears more than one look from a prospective buyer. If you’ve given up on finding a Tri-Five Chevy, make sure you don’t miss this ’55 Pontiac at Mission Classics!
